Two Phis are Prestigious West Point Thayer Award Recipients

thayer_room.jpgDid you know?  Two members of Phi Delta Theta have received the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award at the United States Military Academy at West Point.  Since 1958, the West Point Association of Graduates has presented the award to an outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, “DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.” Only 54 individuals have ever been recognized with this award, including two members of Phi Delta Theta; Neil A. Armstrong (Purdue ‘55) received the award in 1971 and Former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker, III (Texas‘57) received it in 2010.  Other non-Phi recipients of the award include such distinguished Americans as President Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Omar N. Bradley, The Reverend Theodore M. Hesbaugh, President Ronald Reagan and Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

The portraits of award recipients hang in The Thayer Award Room, described by a former Academy Superintendent as “the single more beautiful room at West Point.” The Thayer Award Room provides an elegant background for ceremonial occasions at the Military Academy.

These pictures are of the portraits of our distinguished brothers hanging on the walls of the Thayer Award Room at West Point.
