Trevor Hoffman, All-Star pitcher for the San Diego Padres was the 2006 winner of the Phi Delta Theta Lou
Gehrig Memorial Award. He was presented the award by General Council member Chris Lapple, San Diego Alumni Club President, Stephen Mendiola, Gehrig Committee Member Don Thompson, and Director of Alumni Services, Sean Wagner at Petco Park during the 2007 season.
Hoffman was a spokesman for MLB’s “The Big Bam’s” breast cancer awareness program. He is a member of Garth Brook’s Touch ‘Em All Foundation, a charitable collaboration among MLB players, entertainers and corporations that benefits children’s charities across the nation. Hoffman, who lost a kidney as an infant, donates $200 for every save to the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Hoffman and his wife, Tracy, purchase game tickets for Marine families, many with a deployed parent. He received the 1999 Chairman’s Award, which is presented to the Padre who best serves the local community. He was chosen as the 1997 Combined Health Agencies’ Celebrity Health Hero. He has served as spokesman and participant for the Junior Padre Club and Clinic.
From 1994-2002, Hoffman averaged 38 saves per season, including five 40+ save seasons. He again saved 41 games in 2004 and added 43 more in 2005. In 2006, Hoffman led the National League in saves for the second time in his career converting 46 saves in 51 opportunities; the 2006 season increased his 40+ save seasons to eight. Hoffman also holds the record for the most 30 save seasons with 11. His 179 saves from 1998-2001 are the most by a closer over a four-year span. Through 2006, he has 482 saves and a 2.67 ERA and has fanned 964 batters in 885 innings. He is a five-time All-Star and received the 1998 Relief Man Award after securing 53 saves with a 1.48 ERA.
Hoffman was the third member of the Padres franchise to receive the award, joining Tony Gwynn (1998) and Steve Garvey (1984).
