Canadian Phi Delta Theta Scholarship Foundation 2010 Highlights and Update |
|
2010 marks the 36th anniversary of the Canadian Foundation. Since 1974 the Canadian Foundation has awarded over $180,000 to 182 undergraduates all thanks to the generosity of Phi Delt alumni living in Canada.
Canadian Foundation Update:
- The Canadian Foundation's mandate - to provide scholarships to
deserving Canadian Phi Delt undergraduates - is as relevant as ever,
especially with rapidly escalating tuition fees and diminishing
financial aid from universities;
- In 2010, the Canadian Foundation awarded scholarships totaling $8,000 to four brothers from chapters across Canada:
- Brett Giolma (Dalhousie) won top honours with the J. Fred Green
Scholarship, winning $4,000 -- the largest single scholarship ever
awarded by the Canadian Foundation. Brett was a 2nd year Biological
Physics major with an A average (4.32 out of 4.33 GPA). He is on UBC’s
Dean’s Honours List and the Golden Key Society, having an average in the
top 15th percentile of students. He was his chapter’s Philanthropy
Chair, low Bond for the fall 2009 pledge class and chapter Scholar of
the Year. He is on four intramural sports teams and active in numerous
campus and community service initiatives.
- Mohanned El Bolkiny (Dalhousie) was awarded a $2,500 scholarship.
He was a second year Neuroscience major with an A average (3.86 GPA)
and is on Dal’s Dean’s List and the Golden Key Society.
- The Foundation also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Ajk Palikuqi (Toronto) and a $500 award to Brandon Haas (Alberta).
- The Canadian Foundation has teamed up with CanadaHelps.org which allows alumni to make secure donations using a credit card and receive an immediate tax receipt;
- The Canadian Foundation's Board of Directors are committed to
increasing the effectiveness of the Foundation's mandate and raise more
scholarship funding for our undergraduate brothers:

brochure that can be used during rush events to help scholarship and
highlight the opportunity that brothers have to win a scholarship to
potential Phis.

Indiana Zeta (DePauw) Phis Lead Key Reunion Committees |
|
Alumni Reunion Weekend is the most important and most well-attended event for DePauw graduates each year. It is the principle Annual Fund and engagement weekend on the campus calendar.
This year, the three key milestone all campus class reunion committees are led by Phi Delts. For the 50th its Erik Nelson ‘61; the 25th is being steered by Charley Meyer ’86 and the 10th is headed by Mike Bogers ‘2001.
Each of these brothers has remained active in supporting DePauw. Nelson is a current Trustee, Meyer a member of the Alumni Board and Bogers is the past president of G.O.L.D. (graduates of the last decade) and has been the driving force organizer of the hugely successful Indianapolis monthly luncheon series.
A great thanks to each of these men for their contributions to DePauw and for being great representatives of Indiana Zeta

Welcome Back to School - A Letter from the General Council President |
|
Dear Brothers,
Several
months ago, writing in the Fraternity’s blog, I suggested an addition
to our lexicon of Phi Delt terms. With apologies to those many sports
teams and organizations who attach the word “Nation” as an appendage to
highlight something such as a team’s fan base, I proposed a slightly
different definition.
Phi Delt Nation, noun,
the compilation of the individual and collective actions and
characteristics of members of Phi Delta Theta, whether they be
undergraduates or alumni, living or deceased, regardless of chapter,
national origin, or geographic location.
As fall
approaches, and our undergraduate brothers return to campus, I welcome
everyone back to school and offer a challenge of leadership to our
nearly 10,000 undergraduate Phis.
Leadership, as we know, can be
the result of a group’s collective action or an individual’s personal
initiative. Throughout our Phi Delt Nation, we see many tremendous
examples of leadership every day. And since we like to do things in
sixes in the Fraternity – let me offer you six leadership challenges for
the academic year.
- Maintain
the highest caliber of membership. Not all men deserve to be Phis.
Make sure the men you recruit to membership understand and express the
values and quality that comprise our Fraternity. Make sure they are men
we will be proud to call brothers.
- As you take on a new
pledge class, take a close look at your Phikeia education program and
make sure you are teaching them how to be good leaders and brothers, not
just good Phikeia. Yes, there is a difference.
- Excel
in the classroom to the best of your abilities. Sit in the front of
class, engage with your professors and add to the academic discussion.
- Excel
on the athletic field or performance venue. Always give your best
performance and exhibit exemplary sportsmanship and creativity.
- Engage on and with your campus. Get involved in student government and other student organizations. Lead, don’t just follow.
- Engage in and with the local community and serve someone in need.
You
are all a part of our larger Phi Delt Nation. While we will always be
loyal to, and grateful for, our own individual chapter experiences,
please don’t forget that we are each, in our own sphere of action and
influence, part of a larger brotherhood. Each of us, in our own way, effect and enhance the reputation and future of our collective Phi Delt
Nation.
Have a great fall and let’s show everybody what Phi Delta Theta is all about. Proud to be a Phi!
Yours in the Bond,
Scott Mietchen
General Council President
