California Sigma (Sonoma State) Phis Teeter-Totter 72 Straight Hours for Cystic Fibrosis |
By Casey La Barbera of the Sonoma State Star
This past week the men of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity spent 72 hours straight on a man-made teeter totter as part of their philanthropy to raise awareness and money for cystic fibrosis.
“Teeter Totter began 11 years ago, and was initiated by a brother named Brent “Woody” Bolin who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis,” said Phi Delta Theta President Vince Morrow.
“Each brother signs up for two one-hour shifts during the 72 hour period, but, we usually have so much interest from students and community members that it varies from hour to hour.”
This event takes place each year, the week before the San Francisco Cystic Fibrosis Walk, to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
This year the walk took place this past Saturday, May 1.
“100 percent of the proceeds are donated in person by the chapter, and the entire chapter participates in the walk,” said Morrow.
“Woody passed away 3 years ago, but his widow, Allison, still visits every year to participate in the walk with the chapter, along with alumni brothers who knew Woody.”
During the 72 hours there were a multitude of activities and events that took place.
These included Pie a Phi, Home Run Derby, Dodgeball Tournament, music played each night from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. by DJ and Phi Delt Zach Cohen, movies from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., a raffle, and a dunk tank.
At the end of Teeter Totter there was a memorial service in honor of Woody.
“Last year at the 10th annual teeter-totter, we increased the original 48 hour marathon to a 72 hour marathon in hopes of raising more awareness and funds for the research of cystic fibrosis,” said Morrow.
“Phi Delta Theta really emphasizes our existence as a philanthropic organization, and this is by far one of the best, most enjoyable philanthropies put on each year on campus. It gets better and better each year,” said Morrow.
