New York Zeta (Colgate) Celebrates Successful Year with Awards Dinner
ny_zeta_career-day.jpgMembers of the New York Zeta Chapter gathered on Saturday, May 1st at the historic Colgate Inn in Hamilton, NY for the annual awards banquet for the New York Zeta Fund of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. New York Zeta Fund Vice Chairman William Baker '70 and Secretary Arthur Steneri '56 distributed more than $8,500 in scholarships and academic awards to members of the chapter. Chapter president Brian Bender '11 received the Freeman H. Allen Leadership Award, which is awarded annually to a junior who demonstrates excellence in leadership. The Knights of Pallas Award for the highest GPA was split between Thomas Dinitz '11 and Michael Palmer '10, who each earned a 4.08 GPA during the Fall 2009 semester. Winnie MacKay Scholarships were awarded to 13 brothers who had demonstrated financial need.

Several weeks before the event, Brothers Baker and Steneri spent four days on campus conducting one-hour interviews with each of the scholarship applicants. "We found it to be a wonderful process in that we learned, first hand, how the Phi Delta Theta experience informed and positively affected each applicant's life" said Brother Baker. "In addition, each applicant learned, first hand, that the intergenerational continuum of the Phi Delta Theta brotherhood is real and valuable."

This awards banquet continues the mission of the New York Zeta Fund by providing scholarships and educational opportunities to Phi Delta Theta members at Colgate University. Earlier in the year, nearly 100 New York Zeta alumni and undergraduates met in New York City on January 8th at the University Club for the 4th Annual New York Zeta Career Seminar and Alumni Reception. Co-sponsored by the New York Zeta Fund and the New York Zeta alumni corporation, the event featured keynote addresses on career-related issues by New York Zeta alumni Mark Moyer '86, Greg Dahlberg '98 and Adam Friedman '89. Afterwards, there was a dinner buffet and reception where New York Zeta Phis of all ages had the opportunity to share stories, meet new friends, and remind themselves why Phi Delta Theta is a fraternity for life.
