California Xi (Chico) Wraps Up Very Successful Year |
|
Written by Ryan Giordano
Spring 2010 was a semester of reward for California Xi. In early February we received word of our success as the chapter with the highest Fall 2009 cumulative GPA out of all InterFraternity Council organizations. Early February also saw much success from a philanthropic stance; in the wake of Haiti's earthquake we teamed up with Alpha Delta Pi and Pi Kappa Alpha to put on a basketball tournament called Hoops for Haiti. In the end, we raised just over $1,500 from student organizations. Just a few weeks later, at the Spring Greek Induction Ceremony, we were called up on stage to be recognized as the winner of the University Cup as an outstanding chapter for 2009.
Towards the end of our Spring semester, three Phi Delt's helped coordinate the first annual Cats in the Community event at CSU Chico. Cats in the Community was designed to be a day of community service, recognizing student appreciation for the City of Chico. Over 100 students participated and seven community project sites were served.
Recently, Phi Delt's at Chico have been elected and appointed into several prominent roles for the Fall.
Brother Travis Arendt was elected the VP of Programming and Leadership of the InterFraternity Council. Travis had spent some time researching the potential positions of InterFraternity Council and eventually settled on VP of Programming and Leadership for his interest in event coordination and influence he can have on the Greek reputation. He will be the oversight to Greek Week, IFC Athletics and a variety of Leadership related activities such as conferences, speakers and workshops.
Brother Tony Gorelick was appointed to the position of Coordinator for Up 'til Dawn, an event that Chico views as it's largest, school-wide philanthropy. For the past four years, Chico State has maintained the title of the number one donating university, including a year coordinated by a Cal Xi alumni, Brother Drew Lewis. As per tradition, our chapter will participate in full-force and stay through the early hours of the morning, cleaning up after the event.
Brother Nate Allen was appointed to be the Coordinator of Chico State's Freshmen Leadership Opportunity Program (FLO) for the '10-'11 academic year. Nate will direct to program by providing lesson plans, leadership workshops and diverse experiences for 40 Freshmen. He will also serve as a mentor and an advisor to four facilitators who will work directly with the students on a weekly basis.
Brother Jay Virdee was elected by the student body to serve as the '10-'11 Commissioner of Community Affairs on the Government Affairs Committee. Jay has spent his first year involved with the freshmen leadership program, volunteering for our community service organization (CAVE) and pledging Phi Delta Theta. It's been a busy semester but next Fall Jay will engage the community and continue to serve the university in the Phi Delt way.
Altogether, the chapter has enjoyed celebrating all our successes this past semester. Our current goal is to maintain the high cumulative GPA as a chapter and carry out a large-scale philanthropy to benefit the rape crisis & prevention center in the fall.
