Texas Mu (Texas State) Phi Awarded Tommy Raffen Memorial Scholarship |
San Marcos, TX —On April 30th, Texas State University junior Clay Patterson was named as the 2010 recipient of the Tommy Raffen Memorial Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding member of the Texas State Phi Delta Theta Fraternity who exemplifies the leadership characteristics, optimistic enthusiasm, integrity, and pride in the University that exemplified Tommy’s college life.
The scholarship was established following Tommy’s tragic death in a car accident in 1991. Raffen loved the university and served it well as President of his fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, and was a member of Student Foundation and Order of Omega. Tommy maintained this level of campus leadership while working to pay his way through school. His work ethic, integrity and dedication to the University and its values serve as his positive legacy.
“It wasn’t until the night of the award presentation when I heard stories about the type of person Tommy was, the things he did, and the impact he had on people’s lives that I felt the true meaning of this award. It is an honor and a privilege to be recognized as sharing the same attributes as Tommy,” Clay said.
There is no doubt Patterson is a fit for this award. Clay came to Texas State after completing his service with the United States Marine Corps in 2007. In addition to serving as Student Foundation President for the past year, Clay was also the Governor’s appointment as Student Regent to the Texas State University Board of Regents for 2009-2010. Clay is also the co-founder and President of the Veteran's Alliance, Chief Justice for the Associated Student Government, and member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity (and former Vice President).
Since coming to campus as a freshman in 2007, Patterson has served the University and its student body in organizations and volunteer activities too numerous to list. He exemplifies the caliber of leader that the scholarship seeks to recognize. He is passionate about Texas State and dedicated to its students.
“Every time I look at the award I am reminded that it is my duty to continue working hard and helping others as Tommy did to ensure his legacy continues,” Clay said.
The Tommy Raffen Memorial Scholarship, as well as five other award programs, is supported by the Stelos Alliance (www.stelos.org), a non-profit organization with the mission of helping extraordinary young leaders reach their potential.
