Fort Lauderdale Alumni Club Recognizes Legendary Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger |
Legendary Coach Howard Schnellenberger joined Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 1998 to start a football program from scratch. His first assistant was Brother Don Peirce, Penn State, '54, a member of the Fort Lauderdale Phi Delta Theta Alumni Club. During Coach Schnellenberger's first six months at FAU he and Brother Peirce visited more than 40 organizations, chambers of commerce, service clubs, and professional associations in the communities along the east coast of south Florida to create their awareness for FAU football and raise funds for the program. One of the early groups they visited was the Fort Lauderdale Phi Delta Theta Alumni Club.
In 2001 FAU played their first football game and this year marks the programs 10th anniversary. Last month Brother Peirce had Coach Schnellenberger return to speak to the club on "A Decade of FAU Football". Pictured here is Alumni Club Vice President Leigh Kerr presenting Coach Schnellenberger with a plaque thanking the coach and congratulating him on his great success at FAU, which includes winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship in 2007, the New Orleans Bowl in 2007, and the Motor City Bowl in 2008. Coach Schnellenberger's son Stephen was a Phi at the University of Florida.
