The definition of the Alcohol-free Housing Policy:

All chapter facilities and properties in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity shall be alcohol-free at all times and under all circumstances. The chapter property may be owned by a local house corporation, college or university, or other entity.  If the property is considered Phi Delta Theta “space” by constituencies on campus, the property shall be alcohol-free.  This includes not only the structural facility, but the surrounding outdoor areas including, but not limited to, the front, back, and side yards, parking lot(s) and sidewalks.

Some critics thought it was going to be a long and arduous task for Phi Delta Theta to implement alcohol-free housing.  Others believed that membership would decline.  However, the leadership of Phi Delta Theta knew it would be in the best interest for our undergraduate members and for the future of the Fraternity to refocus our efforts to be a values-based organization.

Therefore, in February of 1997, the General Council announced the Alcohol-free Housing Policy to the world.  Chapters were given more than three years to implement this paradigm shift on their campus and all properties were alcohol-free by the implementation date of July 1, 2000.

Since the implementation, Phi Delta Theta has undergone one of its largest growth spurts in the history of the modern fraternity.  A recent study conducted by the Fraternity Executives Association detailed that Phi Delta Theta had colonized and chartered the second most chapters since 2000 of all fraternities.  This indicates a renewed demand for a values-based organization from students.

The Fraternity realizes that college is an expensive endeavor.  The cost of books, tuition, room and board create a frugal situation for any student.  Phi Delta Theta took the average undergraduate’s financial challenges into consideration when implementing the alcohol-free housing initiative.  The liability insurance costs for members have been drastically reduced because all chapter facilities are alcohol-free and the per-man cost has not only stabilized but has been reduced.  In 1993, the Fraternity had 21 open liability claims (including lawsuits).  As the Alcohol-free Housing Policy was implemented, claims steadily decreased.  The money saved from insurance costs has enabled the creation of other educational programming activities designed to enhance the Phi Delt experience and has resulted in the strengthening of the Fraternity as a whole.

Empowering Our Members to Make Sound Decisions When Alcohol is Involved - Don't Play Doctor

A reckless night of drinking has the chance of altering the course of life forever.  Every year more than 4,000 people die from alcohol overdose, 1,700 of which are college students, a staggering number that could be much lower if students are knowledgable and take proper action when such situations arise.  Don't Play Doctor's purpose is to educate Phi Delts and other college students about the identification of alcohol poisoning and what to do if a brother or friend might have had too much to drink. It encourages all Phis to "Be their brothers' keeper and get professional help - call 911 or take him to the emergency room because his life may depend on it."
