Expansion to UCLA!

ucla.jpgFor generations, Phi Delta Theta has been asking the question, “Are You A Leader?”  One man who answered that question was Edward Dickson.  Dickson was a graduate of UC-Berkeley, but he wasn’t satisfied with the status quo of higher education in California, and he had the vision of creating a great university in the Los Angeles area.  He encountered resistance from the establishment, but he never gave up.  He secured a location in Westwood and raised funds to construct the original buildings… and UCLA was born.

Dickson’s call to be a leader did not end there.  In the first few years after UCLA’s founding, several college fraternities opened on campus.  Dickson had always wanted to be a member of a fraternity, but none of the existing ones met his standards.  In 1924, he worked with students and faculty to establish a fraternity that would set the standard at UCLA – the California Gamma chapter of Phi Delta Theta.

During its storied tenure, the chapter helped many other men to become leaders as well.  William F. Harrah, the founder of Harrah’s Casinos, was initiated into the chapter at UCLA.  So were many future CEOs and Academy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winning entertainers.  The Chapter initiated nearly 1,000 men before closing in 1994 due to failing chapter operations.  With our return in 2009, Phi Delta Theta will offer the unique opportunity for student-leaders to re-establish UCLA’s greatest fraternity and answer the question that Edward Dickson, William F. Harrah, and hundreds of other students have answered: “Are You A Leader?”

We are interested in student leaders who are:

her at UCLA will also provide you with a professional network of more than 160,000 alumni living throughout North America.  For many of Phi Delta Theta's Re-Founding Fathers, their experience allows them to hone their personal leadership skills and prepare for life after college.

To help identify potential Re-Founding Fathers, we will be offering Pallas scholarships in the form of four $250 (4-$250) book scholarships to current and incoming male students at UCLA.  We are looking for men who demonstrate a devotion to academic achievement and a commitment to making both the university and surrounding community better places to live.  Most importantly, we seek men who desire to develop skills that will help them become successful in college, but will also carry over to their professional and personal lives.
