Under the Leadership of Chico Phis, Up 'Til Dawn Raises $200,000+
cal_xi_up_til_dawn.jpgAt California State University, Chico, Up 'til Dawn is an event that raises money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world, and ground-breaking research findings at St. Jude are shared with doctors and scientists all over the world. The hospital's daily operating costs are over $1 million per day, which are primarily covered by public contributions (from programs such as Up 'til Dawn). St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

Each November, the students at California State University, Chico gather in Acker Gym for an all night letter writing campaign. Thousands of students arrive with their address lists, they sign prewritten donation requests and label the envelopes. The rest of the work is done by the Executive Committee, who will seal and stamp each envelope before sending them off. Due to the grand size of the event, the Executive Board must begin planning the event as early as 6 months ahead of time.

A California Xi alumnus, Brother Drew Lewis, directed the event in 2008. His role in such a grand event inspired several Brothers to take an active role in the event planning this year. Phi Delt's at California Xi took on four committee chair positions including Marketing, Donations, Greek Involvement and Student Housing.  Furthermore, 6 other Phi's sat on various committees amongst the board. The role the chapter played on the event was influential, but only a portion of what was required to plan the event.

cal_xi_up_til_dawn2.jpgAfter the event, the Director, Tara Razi, wrote this note to the chapter:

Chico State Phi Delts,

You guys never cease to amaze me. Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude are your three founding principles, and you have proven to our university that not only do you guys follow your principles, but you exceed any expectations or standards your predecessors left for you. On a more serious note, I would like to take a second and thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for the hard work and dedication you put into making this year’s Up ‘til Dawn the best it could be. A few of you came, sat on our executive board and helped plan, while the rest of you guys stayed until 3 am helping clean up, and stamp letters, and without you we would probably still be sitting there stamping. Justin Self and Ryan Giordano, you two have been a great president and e.v.p., and the brothers of Phi Delta Theta, California Xi are very lucky to have you as their leaders. Congratulations on your hard work, because it paid off Monday night. Thanks again!

Love always,
    Tara Razi

The Brothers of California Xi are pleased to have given so much of their time to such a noble cause and will continue to play a role in the planning of this event in future years.
