On October 29, 15 members of the Texas Delta Chapter at Southern Methodist University volunteered to help organize and execute the local Dallas Walk to Defeat ALS. After raising $10,000 for The ALS Association through their annual Casino fundraiser last year, President Austin Cloyd wanted to take the chapter’s involvement one step further.
Coordinating with volunteer committee chair Thom Jareczek, Phi Delta Theta volunteers assisted on all levels of the event, from loading the trucks and cleaning up the event to helping execute the walk itself. Reflecting on the experience, Austin Cloyd stated, “It was amazing to come and do something hands on to help. When you actually see people with ALS and the impact that disease has on its victims and their families, it really puts into perspective why we do this and how important it is to raise money and awareness.”
Money raised from the walk goes to support The ALS Association’s numerous programs including local care, patient support, advocacy and research funding. Texas Delta’s participating members were Austin Cloyd, Jordy Moix, Sam Nichols, Daniel Condrey, Collin Risinger, Wade Schaller, Victor Reim, Warren Lightfoot, Sean Lavin, Brennan Anderson, Turner Heinrichs, Andrew Benson, Timothy Kenneally, John Murphy, and Hays Cape.
